The Southern Tale Spinner is back with a cult unlike any other. Most who leave behind their lives and make a break for Green Bay Community in Green Bay, West Africa believed to be leaving behind a world riddled with ungodly temptations and sinful lusts. Upon committing to the sanctuary as a member, they swore off money, sex, and anything deemed unfit for members to participate in. They were fed and all had necessary jobs around the commune to make this little piece of paradise move through time in synchrony. Women were subservient to the men and were treated as such by all male members of the community. However, once you join, and no matter what you are told, you can never leave. Your freedom comes at a price and many are ready to make a deal with the devil. Join those at Green Bay Community to taste that luxury… and be free.

Our Reviews –

Betsy –

Be Free is a captivating and disturbing view inside a cult unlike others.  You are introduced to enigmatic Father Arthur.  He has set up an “alternative devotion lifestyle” colony in a small town named Green Bay in West Africa.  However, a cult by any other name is still a cult.  The followers of Father Arthur live in an abandoned asylum that they have refurbished.  They live a simple life, inside the bounds of their community.

Men and women have extremely different lives within the walls however.  Men are by far superior to their female counterparts.  The women inside this cult are treated like servants to the men inside the walls.  Relationships between the sexes were not just frowned upon but could lead to severe punishment.

The story moves at a quick pace however it doesn’t feel rushed.  I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next to the characters in this story.  There are a few scenes that were difficult to read, however in true T.S. Woolard fashion, they served to move the story into the direction the characters needed to go.  I would not really call this “horror” in a true sense.  T.S. Woolard writes a horror that has far more of an emotional impact, taking you by surprise and stabbing you in the heart.

If you’ve read other stories in the author’s world you see this is a different part of his universe.  You’ll want to see how it fits in.  Of course, there are little crumbs in the story that make the reader wonder where else this story could lead.  Another amazing tale by the Southern Tale Spinner.

Alex Hensley thought that discovering vampires existing in Sydney was as dangerous as her life could possibly get, but she was wrong. Her very survival still depends on her ability to keep the secret.

Just when Alex believes she has a grip on her new life, Nicholas, the teenage son of her estranged cousin shows up unannounced and gives her a chilling note from his mother, begging for help; the boy is in grave danger.

Nicholas, though kind and mild mannered is not forthcoming and Alex senses something is dreadfully wrong. The more Alex delves, the closer she is to igniting a war more personal for her than she ever dreamed. Though she cannot turn the boy away, something perhaps even worse than vampires has been unleashed in Sydney.

The vampire nation scrambles as tensions rise. Their hold over the city has never been challenged like this, and they would rather destroy Sydney than relinquish it.

How can Alex hope to protect Nick, when the entire city is under threat and Alex can warn no one?

Ideals will be shaken. Friendships will be tested. Allegiances will be questioned.

The streets of Sydney will shatter as a bloodthirsty battle, once thought to exist only in myth, rises at the full moon.

“I don’t give a shit, corporal. Give me command on the radio and I’ll tell them that myself…who the hell are you?” Nightingale asked the rather broad and tall fellow that had stepped into the tent. The stranger didn’t wear a uniform, and sported a tan yet with the most ghastly, waxy skin he had ever seen. Pale green eyes.

“No one of consequence, really,” the stranger said.

“Name. Rank,” Nightingale said.

“We are well past standard pointless military jargon. I’m here to help. Where is the nearest enemy embankment?”

“Pointless? Do you have any idea who you’re talking to?”

“None. And I care even less. This is getting us nowhere,” the stranger said, looking past Nightingale’s shoulder and to the map behind him where he had left circles and small notes. “I’ll start there.”

Author Spotlight – Aaron L. Spear

71500012_459873474615353_8875590405840699392_n

20 Questions with Aaron L. Spear

  1. What made you decide to become an author?

It’s really the only answer to the fact I daydreamed so much as a kid. I get extremely bored and my mind wanders to far off places and creates different people, action scenes with heroes and villains etc.

  1. What is the hardest thing about writing for you?

Editing. The time between finishing the draft and publishing. It’s super important, but I hate it with every fibre of my being. I really wish I could blink and it would be done for me.

  1. Do you have any routines or superstitions that you go through whenever you write a book – Such as a specific room to write in, certain drink, same pen/pencil every time, specific music or noise? Release a book?

I listen to movie trailer music when writing actions.

  1. Who is the one person in the writing profession who has inspired you the most?

Probably my PA, Jo. She was one of the first to really believe in me and think I was worth anything as a storyteller. All through the ups and downs she’s been the rock I needed to keep going. And she’s still there to hold my hand and give a little ego stroking during the rough times.

  1. Which character is your favorite? Which character was the hardest to write? Why?

Kinda hard to pick, as its like choosing between your kids. But in my vampire series, probably Lee Nightingale. He is the absolute worst person possible, but most fans love him coz he just tries to have sex with everything. In my MMA series, I’d say Fiona, as she is the smart ass best friend we all need. She’s not the main character but basically steals every scene she’s in.

  1. Would you consider collaborating on a book with anyone else? If so…who?

Who would be your unicorn author to collaborate with? Definitely Jaymin Eve. She’s incredible with world and tension building, and her character skill is amazing.

  1. Who is your favorite author…someone that you will buy their book even without thinking?

Unfortunately they are all dead. Puzo, Blatty, Dahl.

  1. What is your best piece of advice for someone who wants to write or publish?

Believe in yourself, and grow a thick skin.

  1. If you could ask your readers 1 question and have them all answer…what would it be?

Just how awesome is Speerzie?

  1. What is your writing kryptonite?

Netflix and chill.

  1. Do you plot out your book or do you write as you go?

A little from column A and a little from column B. I used to plot everything but now I’m leaning towards more pantsing. It’s fun and scary.

  1. Do you want each book or series to stand on its own or are you building a universe where all the books/series connect with each other?

I’m building my Speerverse with every book. Everything is connected in some way.

  1. If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice related to writing what would it be?

Get on FB earlier and learn from those that came before. You’ll save yourself a lot of trial and error.

  1. What is the biggest lesson you learned after you published your first book?

MARKET! MARKET! MARKET! ADS! And learn to input these things subtly into groups and conversations, to learn how to do it better.

  1. What is a guilty pleasure?

The music of Aqua.

  1. Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

Gold Coast

  1. What’s an Item on your bucket list?

To have writing as my full time job.

  1. Do you have a spirit animal?  If so, what is it?

The Australian wombat. Chubby, sleeps all day, eats when he’s awake and has sex. That’s their life.

  1. What is your favorite holiday & why?

America. Love the food. Love the people. Most of my fans are there lol. Why wouldn’t I?

  1. What’s your favorite Halloween candy?

Snickers. You’re just not the same monster without one.

Robert enjoys writing challenging, villainous characters and subjects. He loves the Australian humour, in good or poor taste, that is born from those places of darkness. It is his belief that the deeper, more painful the situation, the funnier and better Aussies become.

Australia is a nation of fair fighters, with a proud sense of humour and humility. That combination is unique and rare and continues to inspire and supply him with many characters, brawlers, squealers, pelicans, cowards, galahs, absolute bloody champions and the down- trodden to choose from.

Author Spotlight – Quinn Slater

20 Questions with Quinn Slater

  1. What made you decide to become an author?

I needed to escape my mistakes in life. It allowed me freedom to experience the things I wanted to experience. I needed that outlet.

  1. What is the hardest thing about writing for you?

Confidence. I really am my own worst critic. I have dozens of stories that have not been finished because I lack the confidence to do so, or I have written myself into a corner and I’m not sure how to get out.

  1. Do you have any routines or superstitions that you go through whenever you write a book – Such as a specific room to write in, certain drink, same pen/pencil every time, specific music or noise? Release a book?

When I release a book I like to going hiking and get away from everything. Just be alone and enjoy the peace and quiet.

  1. Who is the one person in the writing profession who has inspired you the most?

Probably my mentor in graduate school when I was working on my MFA. He famously told our class that I was the only student in class who could make two people fuck for three pages. We all got a great laugh. He has no idea I write under a pan name. He also called me out in class one day, saying, “Learn to use a fucking comma!”. He was awesome.

  1. Which character is your favorite? Which character was the hardest to write? Why?

Probably Quin Slater (yes, a character named after my pen name) because he’s a guy that has experienced a number of people walking out on him in his life. People seem to overlook his damaged soul. I feel like I relate to him and his struggles.

  1. Would you consider collaborating on a book with anyone else? If so…who?  Who would be your unicorn author to collaborate with?

If really depends on genre, since I write in several. Literary- Jonathan trooper, Horror-Robert McCammon, Thriller-Jonathan Kellerman

  1. Who is your favorite author…someone that you will buy their book even without thinking?

Jonathan Trooper

  1. What is your best piece of advice for someone who wants to write or publish?

Patience and thick skin. You have to understand that, like so many other parts of life, there are bad people in the business and they are more than willing to take advantage of you. Educate yourself on the business.

  1. If you could ask your readers 1 question and have them all answer…what would it be?

That’s a tough one. Maybe what they thought of my female characters?

  1. What is your writing kryptonite?

Stresses in life. I have certain people close to me that can shut down my mood to write in only a couple of words. It’s too bad because they are close to me and there’s no way to rid myself of them

  1. Do you plot out your book or do you write as you go?

Write as I go. I’v tried plotting it but I enjoy the discovery too much.

  1. Do you want each book or series to stand on its own or are you building a universe where all the books/series connect with each other?

This is a huge issue for me. I have so many different things in my head that I have trouble writing a series.

  1. If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice related to writing what would it be?

Honestly, writing was more important than the people who interfere with the writing.

  1. What is the biggest lesson you learned after you published your first book?

No one believes in your dream more than you do. I thought family and friends would be all over my books. That wasn’t the case. And the more I published the less friendly some people became.

  1. What is a guilty pleasure?

I’d love to do the things in my books.

  1. Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

Hawaii was beautiful. I could live out the rest of my life there.

  1. What’s an Item on your bucket list?

Visit Iceland. I’d also like to visit all the places I’ve read about in books.

  1. Do you have a spirit animal?  If so, what is it?

An Eagle. I’d love to have the power of flight and fly free through the skies

  1. What is your favorite holiday & why?

Christmas because I love to give.

  1. What’s your favorite Halloween candy?

Wax lips J, although I’m not sure they make them anymore.

Solo Circus by T.S. Woolard

Blurb –

From the Southern Tale Spinner, T.S. Woolard, comes 15 Creepy Tales of Horror and Dark Transgressive Fiction unlike anything you’ve ever lived through before. There are stories where clearly someone is stark raving mad—and before you’re through—it may well be you. Open the door and step into Woolard’s World—if you dare.—Dona Fox, award-winning author of “Taking Ink.”

Our Reviews –

Betsy –

Solo Circus is a collection of fifteen short stories that take the reader on a journey between past and present, real and extraordinary, hopeful and horrifying. From “The Savior” all the way through to “Ashley”, each story pulled me in even more than the last. The imagery in “The Savior” made me think, trying to decipher each element. In “Non-Compliant” I was almost imagining the story as one of my favorite television shows. “Before Hell” makes you wonder how two people brought up in the same home can turn out so differently. The final story in the collection, “Ashley”, was by far my favorite of the group. A story that shows the long-lasting effects of abuse made even more disturbing with the addition of creepy dolls. While it is horror it is the psychological aspects of the stories that are more disturbing than any gore contained in the pages. I can definitely see myself rereading and discovering elements I didn’t see the first time around.

The Meaning of Hell by T.S. Woolard

Blurb –

From The Southern Tale Spinner’s darkest side, courtroom scenes so vivid, so engrossing, at first you may forget you’re reading a story from the man who’s been to Hell himself, the transgressive terror T.S. Woolard–until the fists fly out of the page and grab you by the throat. Yes, this is Hell, and it’s going to get so much worse for Attorney John Rhaport. John represents an insane and guilty client, a man who committed heinous crimes–a giant who terrifies John and pulls him into Hell. Horrific scenes of violence will flow like ice water through your veins. Unexpected plot twists and a riveting ending wrap up this gripping page-turner. By adding his transgressive talents to the Courtroom Thriller, I believe T.S. Woolard has created an exciting new genre.

Betsy –

In The Meaning of Hell, we follow the trial of serial killer Jerry Thomas and the events that unfolded afterward. We get a look into the mind of Jerry Thomas through his defense attorney John Rhaport. In his quest to find a defense of Jerry we find him pouring through files from a psychiatrist he saw as a young adult Dr. Steinhardt. We see how depraved and disturbed Jerry truly is as well as almost understand why he’s become the killer he has. A fantastic story that takes you on a disturbing ride, however, once it’s over you’re looking for more. A definite must read for horror and thriller lovers.
